What does the laser treatment do for periodontitis (gum disease)
The LANAP protocol can re-grow the tissues and bone loss to gum disease. This is a research-backed protocol that can target the source of the inflammation without hurting or removing any healthy gum tissue.
What actually happens during the laser procedure?
A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three human hairs) is inserted between the tooth and the gum, and the infection and disease are cleared away without cutting the gums. The roots are thoroughly cleaned of tartar and plaque, and then the laser is used again with a different setting to create a stable, firm fibrin blood clot to seal the pocket.
How is this different from the traditional surgery for gum disease?
When compared to traditional surgery, the LANAP protocol is less painful, results in less post-op sensitivity, less post-op recession, and very little downtime after treatment.
What type of laser is used?
We use the PerioLase MVP-7 and LANAP and LAPIP protocols for treating periodontitis and peri-implantitis. This is the only laser gum disease treatment FDA cleared for true regeneration of gum and bone based on scientific evidence.
Am I a candidate for LANAP?
Because of its minimally invasive nature, this is a less risky procedure for elderly, frail patients and medically compromised patients. Patients who are taking anti-platelet or anti-coagulant medications and cannot stop them or patients with genetic bleeding conditions would all benefit from this procedure without the bleeding risks of traditional surgery. Patients who have severe anxiety and cannot tolerate certain oral surgical procedures are able to better tolerate this procedure.
What training does my periodontist have in using this laser?
Not every periodontist can perform the LANAP protocol using the PerioLase MVP-7. Dr. Hebert completed Laser BootCamp, a comprehensive, three-day, clinical, hands-on, dentist-to-dentist training on live patients at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD). In addition, Dr. Hebert completed the 4th and 5th days of the training curriculum over a one-year period to receive the LANAP Fellowship Status.
Can any dentist use any laser to improve my gum disease?
Only the PerioLase MVP-7 using the parameters of the LANAP protocol can result in laser-assisted regeneration as cleared by the FDA based on scientific evidence. Only periodontists completing the Laser BootCamp have been taught the rigorous LANAP protocol to achieve these clinical results safely.
